By nature, children have a natural desire to learn new things. Every kid is unique, some grasp by hearing and some have to be in constant movement.
My son’s way of learning is different from how I’m used to with his older sister. For example, my daughter, she is more of a quiet style, seat and absorb. Unlike, my son, he needs to see it in action, and asked a ton of questions while pretending he was in a wrestling match.
Everyday can be different depending on the subject matter and environment.
Here are five ways to make learning fun at home for young kids:
Table of Contents
START ON A POSITIVE ENERGY
Kids tend to always be in a good mood and ready to explore. One thing to consider, no matter how stressed you are, try not to reflect it upon them. By doing so, this alone can uplift the child’s mood and improve their self esteem.
Don’t jump straight to the learning process, start by making them laugh. Doing this will have them relax.
LET YOUR CHILD LEAD WHAT THEY WANT TO LEARN AT THE MOMENT
My 5 year-old son’s learning topic changes every couple days. He will not stop asking questions until he can make some sense of the matter. Usually, he’ll catch me off guard, lecture me into something that he learned from school.
For example, he participated in a school planting project. He enjoyed digging his hands into the garden’s soil, planted some seeds in a starter kit and added some water drops. Once the seeds sprout they get to take it home and continue to care for it. What bothered him is the starter kit was falling apart and he thought the plant was not going to make it, that he wouldn’t be able to show his teachers the progression.
I told my son the only way to keep the plant alive is to transplant it. I bet you already know what his next question was “Transplant… What is a transplant? How do you transplant? I grabbed an empty pot and some mixed soil left from a previous project and had him do the transplantation. End of topic.
PLAY WHILE LEARNING
To make it fun, keep a playful attitude while staying focused on the learning task.
My son is a huge fan of WWE and I enjoy playing fighting games. No wonder the wife says she has three kids (our two kids and I). To keep him motivated, I like to bring two of his favorite wrestlers, Roman Reigns and Triple H, to see who will win. He will designate who’s the good and bad guy. Then I asked him to prove it.
When he gets a good outcome, we will make the good guy slam the bad guy and give him a winning score. If not it’s the other way around and he gets to retry in order for the good guy to get a perfect score.
TAKE THE JOURNEY SOMEWHERE ELSE
I have yet to meet that one kid that’ll deny going outdoors. One of the benefits, It allows them to express themselves; they don’t feel limited from the living room to their room. The change of scenery shifts their brains to full curiosity mode. When outside, we turn it into a science class from exploring new bugs to understanding differences between plants.
The kid’s questions can be challenging at times. It’s not because you don’t want to tell them the exact scientific fact, it’s how to break it down to their comprehensive level – That’s the beauty about teaching a young crowd.
INCLUDE TECHNOLOGY INTO THE LESSONS
Technology has reshaped the way we learn and consume information. What we once thought were boring subjects can now become interactive and fun activities. Kids start downloading countless apps on their tablet, start playing interactive games acquiring new skills without knowing.
Stumble upon my son playing Code Karts for kids on my phone, concentrating, slowly mimicking the subject for every chosen obstacle puzzle he placed was stunning. The level concentration was to not be disturbed.
AFTER ALL
Learning can be a thrill moment if you move outside the traditional ways. It doesn’t have to be boring, you can select any of the fun ways above and I guarantee you… you’ll have a blast!
