It used to be the norm for any car issues the first thing you do is to bring it to the mechanic shop and wait for the lengthy bill. Now, you have the ability to educate yourself about your car issue even before taking it to the shop or save money and time by turning it to a personal project by doing it yourself.

SAVING MONEY

If that’s not the main reason for getting your hands dirty then nothing else applies. If your goal is to reduce your financial stress and pay down your debt, there’s no doubt doing things yourself will be economical. Technically, when it comes to working on car projects, the two things you need to worry about are getting the recommended parts and setting up a realistic time frame to do the job.

Let’s say, you borrow some tools from a friend, successfully complete the task and feel comfortable doing it again, then, I’ll highly encourage you start budgeting and investing on your own tools. Only buy what you need. They will all pay themselves after a couple projects. 

For complex problems please consult a professional mechanic or take it to a mechanic shop to avoid more damages.

LEARN IN THE PROCESS

In the process you can learn so much about your car, the more you work on it the more you want to learn about the connected pieces. There is plenty of information you can find online, helpful blogs, and many how-to youtube videos that’ll demonstrate and show you exactly what to expect, respectively to your vehicle model.

FIX WHAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED

Don’t you hate going for an oil change, before finalizing your bill the mechanic comes with a list of other issues to take action on, feels like you’re being cornered? Well, That’s an upsell strategy used by many repair shops to generate more sales. Unfortunately, my main income will not allow me to do so as much as I wish to.

If you get to understand how your car functions, many issues on that list can wait, not all issues are emergency issues. Get familiar with your car, do some research to avoid any unnecessary work.

PEACE OF MIND

Due to the nature of the business, I know for a fact there are no ways mechanic shops will be using Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to serve their clients. On some occasions they will. If so, you will be paying double the cost if not more. Same goes for the instant-oil-change garages, too many surveys and shameful news reports about how they use recycling motor oil and fake other issue.

Given that, it’s best to know what you’re working with and what to anticipate. And, save lots of money in the long run.

OVERALL

It’s understandable that not everyone can work on their own vehicle. There are numerous reliable companies that provide excellent service and will keep your vehicle in good shape.  However, if you make the time and learn some basic mechanical skills, you’ll be putting money back into your pocket. Nothing compares to the feeling of accomplishment that comes from working on your car.
