As a first-generation immigrant, I’ve always stated that when I have children, I’ll carry on some of the life lessons and family values that my parents instilled in me, as well as everything else that they didn’t have the opportunity to do. I’d like to teach her a number of things, but these are the ones that are most important to me.
My Dear Chloey [12 years old], here are a few things I’ve made it my duty to educate you on.

DON’T LET FEAR KEEP YOU OUT OF WHAT YOU WANT TO DO
We all experience fear at some stage in life, so don’t let these feelings keep you from taking advantage of potentially life-changing opportunities.
SAVE AND INVEST
You don’t actually require all of the things that society convinces you that would make you happy. It’s a trap. I did not know the importance of budgeting until I started this financial journey. Get into the habit of making your money work for you by investing in yourself, the stock market, real estate or having your own business. Only keep your emergency fund in a bank account where you can access it.
LIVE WITHIN YOUR FINANCIAL RESTRICTIONS
Don’t be fooled by the marketing that surrounds our daily lives. Just because you see something you want doesn’t mean you can afford – There’s nothing wrong with living frugally. Remember, if you ever have to use your credit card or take a loan to buy anything that will have little long-term worth, it’s a clue that you can’t afford it.
EDUCATE YOURSELF
Anyone who refuses to educate themselves will believe anything that comes their way. Don’t be one of those people. Keep in mind that there is nothing new in this world. Whatever you desire to learn or know, I bet you someone has already written about it. You should read as many books as possible and come to your own conclusions. Stay curious.
MAKING MISTAKES IS ACCEPTABLE
Making mistakes is something that we humans excel at. Trying to be a perfectionist will prevent you from progressing. Rather, learn from your failures and move forward.
EXPERIENCE
Life is full of surprises. It’s fine to try something new and venture outside of your comfort zone. I understand you aren’t a fan of competitive sports like basketball, softball, and others. It’s fine to give it a shot; you never know, you might fall in love with it.
In short, try the things that make you feel uneasy.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO SAY WHAT YOU’RE THINKING
I’ve always encouraged you to express exactly what you’re thinking and not sugarcoat anything, regardless of your surroundings, since you first started putting words together. Yes, your words may cause pain at times, however expressing what you truly believe will set you free.
BULLYING SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED IN ANY FORM
Do not allow others to bully you; also, stand up for those who are being bullied. Whether it’s a friend or a stranger, let them know it’s not okay. This is not the type of group you want to be a member of.
LIVE LIFE OUTSIDE OF A COMPUTER, NOT IN IT.
Always assume that someone hiding behind a computer is faking it. Go out and meet up with friends, go to parties, travel, and learn from other cultures.
TREAT EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING WITH RESPECT
Treat everyone equally, whether they are a VIP or a janitor. Learn to value the opinions of others.

I will always be there for you no matter what happens while I am still on this planet. even if everything goes wrong, I’ll stand with you in the pouring rain.
LOOK FOR A COMPANION WHO WILL FEED YOU FIRST
Grandpa used to remind me when I was small that a man’s job is to protect and provide. A man should constantly ensure the safety of his family. Anything else is beyond the point.
IN THE END
There’s still so much I want to teach you. At the same time, I understand that as we grow older, we will discover new things, and I will always do my best to steer you in the proper direction.
I hope you can use many of these examples to teach your own daughter what I’d like to teach my daughter. Being a father is not easy, but we have a responsibility to fulfill.
